Nearly 18,000 participants joined a "Freedom in Iran" demonstration in the German city of Dusseldorf by Saturday afternoon, police said.
They carried banners demanding the return to Iran of Reza Pahlavi, the son of the last shah. "King Reza Pahlavi" was written on banners with large photos of the Iranian politician and former crown prince, who currently lives in the United States.
The demonstrators marched through the city centre to the regional parliament. Everything remained peaceful until the afternoon, a police spokeswoman said.

The police were deployed with hundreds of officers.
Another rally was scheduled to take place on Saturday afternoon until early evening at Dusseldorf's Schadowplatz in the city centre with up to 1,500 people.
Due to traffic disruptions, the police had called on visitors to the city centre to use public transport.
