Rockies name Nicky Schmidt Senior Vice President and Chief Revenue & Strategy Officer

The Colorado Rockies announced Monday afternoon that they had hired Nicky Schmidt to be their new senior vice president and chief revenue and strategy officer.

Schmidt—of no relation to former Rockies general manager Bill Schmidt—spent the previous 14 years of her career with the Cleveland Guardians. She has held a variety of different roles with Cleveland, most recently serving as the Guardians’ senior vice president of organizational strategy and business analytics.

Schmidt has overseen major ballpark and front office transformations and worked to implement organizational strategy. She was also the co-lead for Cleveland’s re-brand to the Guardians in 2022.

“While I thank all of my colleagues at the Guardians for our incredible journey together, I’m honored to join the Colorado Rockies at such an exciting moment and bring my experience to the Mile High City,” Schmidt said via press release. “The Rockies’ deep roots in the community, iconic fan experience at Coors Field, and commitment to growth present a tremendous opportunity. I look forward to working with the team to build on that foundation and elevate how we connect with fans and partners across Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region.”

The role of chief revenue & strategy officer was created by executive vice president Walker Monfort this offseason.

“The job of the chief revenue and strategy officer would be to grow revenues to be reinvested back into baseball operations and the team,” a league source told the Denver Post back in October.

The Rockies have explained that Schmidt will oversee the Rockies’ ticketing, merchandise, and corporate partnerships departments and report directly to Walker Monfort. Several of these roles were previously held by Monfort himself before his promotion to executive vice president mid-season and the retirement of Greg Feasel.

“Nicky is an exceptional and innovative leader with a deep understanding of the modern sports business as shown through her time with the Guardians,” Walker Monfort said. “By creating this position and bringing her on board, we are continuing to strengthen the foundation of our organization and are positioning ourselves to grow, evolve, and deliver the type of product our fans deserve.”

This is the second hire from outside the organization Walker Monfort has made this offseason. He previously brought in longtime baseball and football executive Paul DePodesta to serve as the Rockies’ new president of baseball operations.

The Rockies will potentially make more hires this week—such as a general manager and other front office pieces—before the Winter Meetings start next week.
