MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Sheldon Timothy Herrington, the man who pleaded guilty to murdering University of Mississippi student Jimmie “Jay” Lee, is scheduled to be sentenced on Tuesday morning.
This comes after Herrington was scheduled to have a jury selection on Monday, but pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and tampering in connection with Lee’s death instead.

Man indicted on capital murder charge in Jimmie ‘Jay’ Lee case
20-year-old Jimmie “Jay” Lee, who disappeared in July of 2022, was believed to have been visiting someone at Molly Barr Trails in Oxford at the time of his disappearance. Lee’s friends and family reported him missing after he failed to return home. Herrington was accused of killing Lee to hide an alleged romantic relationship.
Herrington went to trial in December 2024, but a jury was unable to reach a verdict, and a mistrial was declared.
In February 2025, Lee’s remains were found in Carroll County, Mississippi, by deer hunters nearly three years after his disappearance.
