OXFORD, Miss. — As winter weather continues to move through North Mississippi, road conditions across Oxford and Lafayette County continue to worsen.
The city of Oxford began closing roadways early this morning due to the weather.
In a social media update, Mayor Robyn Tannehill says the icy precipitation predicted throughout the day will impact roadways and increase the possibility of outages.

As more ice accumulates, tree limbs and power lines can be weighed down, leading to power disruptions.
The mayor says crews are staged and ready to respond as conditions warrant.
They actually started clearing the roadway of any ice and snow earlier this morning. We have seen a few vehicles slip and slide on the road, but this is just one of the areas of concern. Not just city officials, but county officials are also keeping an eye on the roadways. They’re telling us conditions will continue to deteriorate.
“It’s going to be a long, drawn-out process. So, people just stay calm, stay home, and we’ll work our best to get everything back to order as quickly and safely as possible,” said Beau Moore, Lafayette County Public Information Officer.

Moore says they have been preparing for this winter storm for days, and crews are ready to respond to all emergencies.

He says roads county-wide have become increasingly more hazardous due to ice and sleet, and all travel should be restricted to emergencies only.
Moore says the mixed precipitation also makes it difficult to keep the roads clear.
“And if it ends up being more ice, that’s just going to take a longer amount of time to get cleared. We can push snow. We can push sleet. You can’t push ice,” said Moore.
County officials say they are coordinating with local power providers on restoration plans if there is significant icing.
